Requirements to become a Firefighter


In accordance with the State Law of Georgia, Rules and Regulations of the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council, and Department Operating Guidelines all firefighters must meet the following qualification to be eligible and hold membership with the department and obtain a state certification.

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Not have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction or of a crime which if committed in this state would constitute a felony under the laws of this state within ten (10) years prior to employment.
  3. Pass a Criminal History Background Check.
  4. Be deemed to be of good moral.
  5. Pass a drug screen.
  6. Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination and successfully pass the minimum physical agility requirements.
  7. Live within Polk County or within a 5 mile radius of a fire station if residence is not within the borders of Polk County.
  8. Obtain minimum certification requirements established by the Georgia Firefighters Standard and Training Council within 18 months of appointment.


Benefits of Being a Polk County Firefighter
